Enhance the Efficiency of Next-Generation Wireless Infrastructures with the IDT Pre-Processing Switch Family

Accelerate digital signal processor performance and increase bandwidth

The IDT pre-processing switch (PPS) for digital signal processor (DSP) clusters was the industry’s first off-the-shelf product of its kind, and initiated a new family of solutions from IDT.  Optimized for wireless baseband processing applications and utilizing the Serial RapidIO® interconnect, the IDT PPS is an advanced semiconductor solution integrating an innovative suite of byte- and packet-level manipulation capabilities designed to offload DSPs of specific bandwidth-intensive tasks.  This offload can accelerate each DSP within a cluster by up to 20%, enabling the processors to focus on other compute-intensive functions.  The first in a series of IDT products designed to offer a complete data-acceleration solution for DSPs and other key components in wireless baseband processing applications, the PPS allows customers to create scalable, flexible, and cost-effective solutions.

The PPS Gen 2 is the latest addition to IDT wireless infrastructure solutions, and the newest member of the company’s innovative, off-the-shelf, Serial RapidIO®-enabled pre-processing switch (PPS) family, which addresses the interconnect and acceleration needs of 3G and beyond.

The PPS Gen 2 increases DSP cluster performance in two ways. It optimally distributes data to the DSP cluster to prevent bottlenecks, and it performs end-point functions - such as lower-level data manipulation - freeing the DSP to support higher value-added services and differentiating algorithms.  The PPS Gen 2 thus offers a great deal of the standard functionality often implemented in expensive FPGAs and ASICs, while delivering end-point functionality normally executed using the increasingly scarce resources of the DSP.  The PPS Gen 2 liberates FPGA gates to be used to implement further differentiating functionality, or enable the use of a smaller, lower-cost FPGA.

Both solutions conduct standard Serial RapidIO (sRIO) switching operations, complemented by an ability to execute byte- and packet-level data manipulation tasks, and other mathematical and memory management operations that significantly offload the end-points in baseband processing clusters. The result is higher performance at reduced cost, reduced power consumption, and the elimination of a great deal of custom design risk. Providing even more advanced operations than its predecessor, the PPS Gen 2 includes unique enhancements to support system bring-up and debug operations, as well as a richer endpoint features set.
