SANTA CLARA, California, October 13,
1997-Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT) (NASDAQ: IDTI), today
announced the availability of the IDT WinChip C6 microprocessor, with
a micro-architecture optimized for Microsoft Windows business applications.
The IDT WinChip C6 processor is compatible with other Pentium®
-class x86 processors with MMX technology and is available at
speeds of 180 MHz and 200 MHz. IDT expects to start sampling the IDT
WinChip C6 processor at 225 MHz and 240 MHz in November 1997.
The IDT WinChip C6 processor was designed
by Centaur Technology, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of IDT. The microprocessor's
revolutionary design, at 30 to 60 percent the size of similar Pentium-class
processors and consuming as much as 50 percent less power, is geared
toward the sub-$1,000 desktop and sub-$2,000 mobile PC product categories.
"The availability of the IDT WinChip
C6 processor represents a breakthrough in providing Pentium MMX-class
performance at lower power and price levels," said Glenn Henry, president
of Centaur Technology. "IDT's WinChip C6 processor was developed to
deliver a high level of performance running Windows business applications
in PC configurations typically found at sub-$1000 price points, while
providing full compatibility for all Windows and x86 software."
"IDT's WinChip C6 processor, is targeted
toward PC buyers that purchase systems and motherboards through the
under-served third tier reseller channel," said Len Perham, IDT's president
and chief executive officer. "This focus provides third tier PC manufacturers
with advantages that translate into superior value at a particular price
point and brings the best price performance to a broader market."
Redefining the Performance/Price
Equation
The IDT WinChip C6 processors' small
die size - a mere 88mm2 - and low power are achieved by simplifying
the architecture and eliminating or reducing complex logic found in
other processors. The small die size translates to lower manufacturing
costs and lower power dissipation. At 5.4-million transistors, this
processor is manufactured using IDT's cost effective 0.35-micron, 4-layer-metal
CMOS technology. The IDT WinChip C6 processor features competitive performance
with other Pentium-class processors based on benchmarks such as Winstone®
97 business running on Microsoft Windows® 95. The IDT WinChip C6
has a suggested price of $90 for 180MHz and $135 for 200MHz in 1,000
unit quantities.
Socket 7 Compatibility & Industry
Approvals
The IDT WinChip C6 processor has been
tested for compatibility by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Lab
(WHQL). Every IDT WinChip C6 processor will carry the "Designed for
Microsoft Windows 95" logo. The processor has also received XXCAL ( www.xxcal.com)
Platinum certification. This provides assurance that the IDT WinChip
C6 processor is compatible with software and hardware products used
by major corporations and end users throughout the world. The processor
runs all leading operating systems including Windows 95, Windows NT®,
Windows 3.x, MS-DOS®, Novell® NetWare, OS/2 Warp, Unix®,
Linux and Solaris as well as other software packages and the latest
MMX-enabled multimedia applications. BIOS support is available from
industry leaders such as Award Software International, American Megatrends
Incorporated, Phoenix Technologies and SystemSoft Corporation. The IDT
WinChip C6 processor has also been qualified by market share leaders
among motherboard manufacturers worldwide.
The IDT WinChip C6 processor is offered
in a 296 Ceramic Pin Grid Array (CPGA), Socket 7 compatible package,
which enables PC manufacturers to leverage the established and cost
effective (Socket 7) motherboard, chipset and BIOS infrastructure.
