The system monitor device is designed to monitor the voltage, processor operation and temperature in any type of computing system, including servers, routers and storage area networks. The system monitor prevents these computing systems from operating in error or unsafe modes, thus eliminating potential system damage. The IDT 9WDV3501 system monitor device is also pin programmable, allowing customers to purchase a single device that meets all of their system specifications rather than purchasing several individual devices - each with separate functionality - as in the past. The resulting benefit is that IDT customers now have greater design flexibility while lowering design and cooling costs.

 Key Benefits and Features

Benefits Features
Easy to Use Timing is pin programmable, no host control is needed
Flexible and customizable Other sources have fixed timing & comparator thresholds
If any parameters fall outside of pre-determined ranges, the system fault is automatically corrected and dealt with The monitoring is done in hardware, no software involved!
Helps prevent incorrect system starts and protects against potential system errors A power-on reset function holds the reset pins in low-power mode when the user first turns on the power switch, and allows the power supplies to reach specified levels
Ensures system is functioning correctly A watchdog timer "monitors" the control microprocessor
Ensures that the logic and microprocessor function correctly A power supply monitor continually checks the power levels of the system to see if any of the power supplies go below a specified minimum voltage
Helps increase system reliability

System monitor resets the system and keeps it reset until the power levels reach a safe level

This 9WDV3501 functional diagram shows 5 voltage inputs and watchdog timer logic driving two programmable timers used to drive external system resets.

The System connection drawing shows how the 9WDV3501 “SysMon” device is used in the complete application. The resistor dividers scale the power supply voltages for detection. A general purpose I/O pin (GPIO) from the control processor is connected to the watchdog timer input and is pulsed by software to determine correct program operation. The two reset outputs with different timings are routed to the CPU and system logic.
