Santa Clara, Calif., October 18, 1999 – IDT, Inc. (Nasdaq:
IDTI), the world’s leading supplier of multi-ported memory products, today
announced that it has increased the speed of its 3.3-volt synchronous
dual-port SRAM devices to 133 MHz, creating the industry’s fastest 36-bit
dual-port SRAM family. In addition, the enhanced devices include selectable
3.3-volt or 2.5-volt I/Os on each port, providing unequaled flexibility for
designers developing mixed-voltage systems. Because these dual-ports provide
a direct interface between mixed-voltage components, designers can easily
combine leading-edge 2.5-volt devices, such as DSPs and network processors,
with 3.3-volt technology.
"We designed these dual-port memories to support the
emerging class of embedded microprocessors, DSPs and network processors that
are moving to 2.5-volt operation," said Carl May, multiport memory
product marketing manager for IDT. "Additionally, the simultaneous
access of data from two ports, combined with the 36-bit-wide bus and 133-MHz
operation, allows system designers to achieve 9.6 Gbps bandwidth (defined as
width x speed x two ports), making these dual-ports ideal for data-intensive
applications such as ATM and Ethernet switches and routers."
Dual-Port Highlights
IDT’s synchronous dual-port family includes a 3.3-volt
core with selectable 3.3-volt or 2.5-volt I/Os which provides designers with
the flexibility needed to combine legacy components with 2.5-volt system
components such as DSPs or microprocessors. The dual-ports feature a
synchronous interface, with independent clocks on each port that are able to
run at different frequencies. The devices employ separate per-port
full-boundary counters that simplify burst operations by eliminating the
external logic used to generate addresses on each rising clock edge. The
devices also provide a dual chip-enable feature that simplifies the
connection of two dual-port memories for depth expansion without external
logic. Separate byte controls allow the dual-ports to facilitate bus-matching
on both ports allowing configurations of x9, x18, x27 or x36 widths. These
devices are compatible with IDT’s existing 100 MHz, 36-bit synchronous
dual-port SRAMs.
Dual-port memories provide higher bandwidth than all other
types of memory solutions, including multiplexed SRAM. The memories double
bandwidth by allowing simultaneous access to a common memory array through
two ports. In multi-processor applications, the result from one processor is
loaded into memory, while an earlier result is accessed by another processor.
This ability to accommodate two independent random operations makes the chips
useful as buffers in networking applications where an incoming stream of data
is stored, while at the same time a previously stored block of data is processed.
