Advantages of 6LoWPAN for Wireless Sensor Networks

From a small local sensor network used for monitoring several points of use to a network spanning meters in range with ad-hoc sensor nodes or hosts, 6LoWPAN excels in low overhead ultra-low power (using UDP) data routing to worldwide use in the Sub-1 GHz frequency bands.

6LoWPAN enables transmission of IPv6 over IEEE 802.15.14 radio links by adding an adaptation layer between the data link layer and network layer of the open systems interconnect (OSI) model. With IPv6, 3.4*1038 unique addresses are available to cover the tens of billions of connected devices to come. 

As an open standard, 6LoWPAN is closer to full interoperability with other manufacturer devices and builds on top of existing IP communication networks. IDT modules utilize Sub-1 GHz frequency bands for better signal propagation (rather than the crowded 2.4 GHz band) and support large mesh network topology for long range with very low power consumption.
