Renesas offers innovative, high performance gas sensors for indoor air quality (IAQ), outdoor air quality (OAQ), refrigeration air quality (RAQ), and industrial leak detection. Renesas' gas sensors are capable of accurate detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3), hydrogen (H2) and other flammable gases, and leverage advanced sensing materials with more than 15 years of proven stability and reliability.
Renesas provides two gas sensor platforms to fit your needs: the ZMOD and SGAS. The ZMOD platform is an integrated digital and calibrated gas sensor ideal for high volume consumer and industrial IAQ applications, while the analog SGAS family is best suited for industrial control and leak detection applications.
ZMOD Gas Sensor Platform
The ZMOD family provides a range of integrated digital sensor modules that provide best-in-class stability and sensitivity. In addition to being chemically and electrically calibrated, the platform’s flexible interface enables software configurable indoor, outdoor, and refrigeration air quality sensing solutions for sensing VOCs, ozone and NOx gases.
Renesas has a rich history of shipping precision ASICs that are accurate, energy-efficient, and provide maximum flexibility through software-configurability. The combined experience of both sensing materials and sensing controls has created the industry’s most accurate and flexible gas sensing platform.
Renesas' ability to provide a configurable sensing platform comes from three factors: materials, temperature, and time. The MOx material delivers outstanding sensitivity to air quality contaminants, with a well-controlled manufacturing process developed and demonstrated over many years. Renesas' ability to vary operating temperature and time at temperature comes from our innovative ASIC. These three parameters create a tunable system for reliable detection of a wide range of air contaminants. Our ZMOD platform can leverage critical parameters based on target gases to optimize sensitivity and provide the ultimate firmware-enabled gas detection platform. Renesas' advanced manufacturing supply chain, calibration for consistency and JEDEC-based qualification ensure best results for our customers.
ZMOD4410 Indoor Air Quality Platform
The ZMOD4410 gas sensor platform is designed to identify trace gases in various locations within indoor environments and recognizes the indoor air quality (IAQ) definition from the German Environment Agency (UBA). In addition to detecting total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and estimate carbon dioxide (eCO2) concentrations, the ZMOD4410 gas sensor module can be configured for use in individual rooms in homes and buildings, such as bathrooms and kitchens, to solve unique air quality problems in each room. The ZMOD4410 sensor connects to a customer microcontroller, which can be configured with Renesas' library of downloadable firmware to address specific applications, such as thermostats, air purifiers, building controls, smart fans and HVAC equipment. For example, if an application requires a battery-powered source, a low power firmware configuration can be downloaded, providing an optimized duty cycle operating within a restricted power budget.

ZMOD4510 Outdoor Air Quality Platform
The ZMOD4510 is the industry’s first digital outdoor air quality (OAQ) sensor module and is calibrated to detect ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases that contribute to unhealthy air quality. These devices provide reliable detection that correlates with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Air Quality Index (AQI) for measuring these gases. These sensors provide vital information that helps individuals manage their health and daily activities, as well as enable systems to efficiently manage smart air handling systems in buildings, factories, and the home.

ZMOD4450 Refrigeration Air Quality Platform
The ZMOD4450 integrated digital gas sensor module for refrigeration air quality (RAQ) applications enables manufacturers to add new odor detection and mitigation capabilities to their smart refrigerators. The ZMOD4450 is software configured to sense a wide variety of gases that produce odors, affect food taste or cause foods to spoil prematurely. Early detection of these gases – ethylene, hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, trimethylamine and more – enables consumers to identify and discard spoiled food before it affects other foods.

SGAS Family Gas Sensor Solutions
Renesas' SGAS gas sensor portfolio features trace hydrogen, industrial organic chemical (including VOC, TVOC), and flammable gas sensors. The devices utilize innovative sensing materials to achieve industry-leading stability. This results in fewer calibration cycles and longer product service life, which can save costs associated with replacing or recalibrating sensors in the field. In addition, superior gas sensitivity and selectivity enables customers to detect low-levels of gas, while avoiding false readings.

About Gas Sensors for Leak Detection and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Applications, VOC Sensors
A gas sensor (often called a gas detector) is a device used to determine the presence and amount of a specific gas or gases. At the core of any gas detection system is a sensor element. The gas sensor element is typically manufactured to detect a specific gas, and convert that measurement into an electrical signal that can be interpreted by the system. Several factors influence the quality of a gas sensor, including accuracy (how accurate is the measurement), sensitivity (detection of very low levels of gas), selectivity (how well it performs in the presence of other gases), and stability (how reliably it performs year after year).
Renesas' gas sensors provide industry-leading specifications, addressing industrial leak detection and indoor air quality (IAQ) applications. Options are available for measuring the presence of hydrogen gas, methane gas, propane gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC).
MOx Sensor Technology Offers Superior Performance
MOx sensors, sometimes called chemiresistive sensors, are well known for their ability to offer affordable, reliable performance in harsh applications compared to non-MOx sensors. MOx materials and appropriate deposition methods that have been in use for more than 10 years ensure production of the most reproducible and reliable sensors that will enable you to safely predict the future performance of your products.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Propane Gas Sensors
Liquefied petroleum and propane gas sensors are used to detect mixtures of hydrocarbon gases. These gases are used for fuel in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles. Unfortunately, these systems have the potential to leak small quantities of gas into the environment. While there are well established approaches to quantifying explosive levels, such as pellistors and non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensors, detection of trace or ppm levels is a challenge for many sensor technologies. The high sensitivity and fast response time of Renesas propane gas sensors makes finding leaks easier.
Methane Gas Sensors
Methane gas sensors monitor the colorless, odorless, hydrocarbon gas. Quick detection of this gas is vital, as this is a contributor to climate pollution and global warming. While there are well established approaches to quantifying explosive levels, such as pellistors and non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensors, detection of trace or ppm levels is a challenge for many sensor technologies. The high sensitivity and fast response time of Renesas methane gas sensors makes finding leaks easier.
