Why does the IDT 8V97051 register map have two “extended registers”? What makes them different from the other registers?

In addition to provide the best combination of phase noise and spurious performance, wide output frequency range and low power consumption, the 8V97051 is also pin compatible with similar solutions from other manufacturers. In order to keep some level of software compatibility, the 8V97051 has six main registers that need to be programmed for normal operation. In addition, in order to provide more control of the Local Oscillator (LO) function, the 8V97051 has two optional additional registers, called “extended registers”, that provide additional features such as increased output frequency resolution (16 bits), more RF output power options, more DSM types and orders, a Device ID and Rev ID, as well as a Readback mode.
