Crystals, Oscillators and Frequency Control Products (FCP)

Frequency Control Products (FCP) are asynchronous clock sources in industry-standard form factors. These devices are internally referenced and do not require any external frequency reference, such as a crystal. Generally only a single-output frequency and one control pin are required to utilize these simple functions. By matching industry standard footprints and pinouts, IDT’s oscillator IC products are generally second-source-able with common crystal oscillator products.

A crystal oscillator circuit (or clock oscillator) uses the mechanical resonance of a vibrating crystal or piezoelectric material to create an electrical signal at a precise frequency. This frequency is commonly used to provide a stable clock signal for digital integrated circuits within a system. The most common type of piezoelectric resonator used is the quartz crystal, although IDT’s silicon and MEMS-based resonators are gaining strong traction as alternative replacement products. In general, a crystal oscillator circuit sustains oscillation by accepting a voltage signal from the resonator, amplifying it, and feeding it back to the resonator. When the energy of the generated output frequency matches the losses in the circuit, the oscillation can be sustained.
